Ancestral Home of James Knox Polk, Eleventh President of the United
States of America
Cavanacor House, located on the outskirts of Lifford, is one of the
oldest inhabited houses in Donegal. It was built in the early 1600s and
is the ancestral home of James Knox Polk, 11th President of the
United States of America. His great, great, great grandmother (Magdelene
Tasker) was born here in 1634. She later married Captain Robert Bruce
Pollock and emigrated to the USA.
King James II dined here on the 20th April, 1689 on his way to the
siege of Derry. He granted a protection to the house. The tree he
dined under still stands in the grounds.
The House itself is furnished in Jacobean and Georgian style.
There is a museum, art gallery, craft shop, tea room, walled garden and
working pottery in the fortified yard. The tea room serves
home baking. There is a children's play area, guided tours, toilets and
coach parking.
The Cavanacor Gallery attached to Cavanacor House was set up in 1999 and is devoted to
showing contemporary art. The gallery aims to bring contemporary art
to a wider audience and has established a professional, commercial venue in
the Northwest. The gallery shows work by both established and
up-and-coming
national and international artists.
Location
Take the N14 at the Lifford round-a-bout for 3km to Rossgier. The house
is signposted on the left for 200m.
