County Donegal is located in
the North West of Ireland, bounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean
and with a land mass totalling 483,040 hectares. Almost 10,000 hectares
of the County is taken up with water, including lakes and long tidal
inlets. A significant amount of the Donegal terrain is upland rough
pasture and bog, so the challenges for those who have wished to
cultivate anything have been enormous. From a geologically point of view
the county is complex ranging from granite to quartzite mountain ranges.
Within these are a variety of soils left by glacial deposits, so the
Donegal gardeners of the 21st century, have to deal with formations
created millions of years ago.
Remnants of early gardens are to be found at the cloister garden of
Donegal Friary (1474) and at Doe Castle on the shores Sheephaven Bay
(1544). The older gardens in the Donegal Garden Trail date to the early
19th century and in these you will find superb specimens of
rhododendron, magnolia, eucryphia and parrotia to name but a few.
If you can visit only a few gardens on the Donegal Garden Trail, you
will find a wealth of devoted garden owners, botanical surprises
everywhere and wonderful displays of individuality in planting schemes.
Please note that the gardens open at different times and that some are
open for short periods only. Others such as Glenveagh, Oakfield Park,
St. Columbs, the Celtic Garden and Salthill are open for extended
periods. Nearly all the gardens carry either an admission fee or
suggested donation to charity.
Donegal Garden Trail would like to thank all the private garden
owners who have agreed to open their gardens to a wider audience, thus
promoting the art of horticulture. Whilst travelling from place to
place, do enjoy the breath-taking scenery whether it is of sea, sky or
mountain, and notice the unique mantle of natural flora combining
heather, rowan, bracken, whin bush, birch and sedge in a tapestry of
colour on the mountain-sides, making your visit to Donegal an even more
unique experience.
