Fort Dunree in the Irish language means, “Fort of the Heather” and
this indicates that the location has been an important defensive site
down through the ages. Today however, the natural beauty and
abundant wildlife around the fort are drawing increasing numbers of
visitors to one of the most beautiful and peaceful locations on the
Inishowen Peninsula.
Fort Dunree was first opened to the public in 1986 and has attracted
tourists from all over the world ever since. It is a must see for every
visitor to this part of Donegal.

The
Fort Dunree Military
Museum uses the latest DVD and interactive technology to explain in a
vibrant way the unique history and present day role of Fort Dunree. A
visit to the museum will include a video film presentation in the
audio-visual auditorium, access to museum displays which fully
demonstrate life at
Fort Dunree, showing its crucial role in costal
defence, neutrality protection and a range of coastal artillery. The
underground bunkers also contain a collection of artefacts that give
insight into the day to day operation of the Fort.
There are fabulous walks around
Fort Dunree with magnificent
views of Lough Swilly. A series of signposted footpaths allow the
visitor to explore at their own pace. Detailed information boards,
shelters, picnic tables and benches help to create a memorable
experience whether you are a first time or regular visitor. This
spectacular natural location is also rich in flora and fauna, some
of it unique to the area. This is portrayed in a beautiful wildlife
exhibition in the old fort hospital. There is also a cafeteria where
visitors to the centre can relax and take in the atmosphere of the Fort.
