Letterkenny Reunion Festival
History of the Letterkenny Reunion
When Johnny Joe McCollum and Jamie Sweeney met for a chat outside the
old Downtown Bar little did hey know then that something unique was
about to happen which is now known as the Letterkenny Reunion. During
their conversation many topics were discussed but they finished up with
the idea of attracting old townies back to their roots and how this
could be achieved. Many of the names that sprung to mind were of people
who emigrated many years ago for one reason or another and if a plan was
put in place, this would be an opportunity for them to return home and
witness the changes that took place since they left. They added one more
name to the organising committee, that of Johnny Gallagher R.I.P. and
the first reunion was set for August 1991 to encourage emigrants from
Letterkenny to come home to meet and reunite with former friends and
family over a few days in August.
This unique festival provides am extended family atmosphere with
nostalgic memories, excitement and joy as old friends are recognised and
acquaintances renewed. the atmosphere is electric as family members meet
at home from many parts of the world. Their memories and renewed
friendships are carried with them abroad as the look forward from one
reunion to the next. the reunion committee keep this contact alive via
local media and websites.
Our reunion friends not only talk about the past to the youth and young
at heart but also to familiarise themselves with the new developments
and progress in the town of Letterkenny. They participate in our
organised events, enjoy local amenities and spend money in local shops,
restaurants, hotels, pubs, taxis and B&Bs.
Some stay to enjoy fishing, golf, snooker, gaelic and soccer and
sight-seeing trips around the county. When they return to their new
homes they are valued ambassadors promoting this area to other emigrants
and friends abroad.
Our aim is to promote tourism in the region, while strengthening ties
between Letterkenny and surrounding areas with its former residents,
relations and friends on a national and international level from a
cultural, economical and social aspect.
The Letterkenny Reunion will be celebrating its coming of age in 2009 as
that will be their seventh in total to date and the dedicated voluntary
committee members will ensure that the celebrations will be as good if
not better than the ones that passed on beforehand. In excess of two
thousand invitations were forwarded to known emigrants and their
families worldwide for the previous reunion and the list has grown
substantially since then in preparation for the next event. Post will be
delivered to Scotland, England, Wales, the U.S.A., Canada, Italy,
Australia, New Zealand, France, Holland, Germany, Spain, Brazil, South
Africa and to every county in Ireland along with other destinations too
numerous to mention before the completion of this year.
The Committee led by Chairman Niall O'Donnell, Margaret Madden, Caroline
Mackey, Kathleen O' Doherty, Carol McGarvey, Marette Mackey, Gretta
Donnelly, James Friel, Tony Duffy, James McMonagle, Dessie Kelly
welcomes everyone from far and near to the 2009 event which takes place
from Sunday 2nd to Friday 7th August [inclusive] and that they have a
most pleasant stay in the town we all grew up in and widely known as the
town we love so well.
