Introduction:
LYIT is situated in Letterkenny,
County Donegal and was founded in 1971
to provide higher education in technical, business and scientific
disciplines in the North Western region of Ireland. It has evolved
continuously since and has a current enrolment of approximately 2500
students.
General Information:
LYIT is located in a very scenic environment. The campus is a five
minute walk from
Letterkenny's town centre. Driving time from Dublin,
the Capital city, is approximately 3 ½ hours. The nearest airport is
City of Derry, which is approximately a thirty minute drive.
LYIT campus has expanded considerably over the past number of years,
recently adding a new wing, which includes a library, four auditoria,
nine state-of-the-art computer suites, restaurants, reception and
administrative offices. This building was one of four educational
buildings in Ireland singled out for praise by the OECD. The next phase
of development (which has recently been completed) includes a
multi-purpose hall, incorporating a student services centre; sports
fields and a new wing providing facilities for Design and Nursing
students as well as general teaching space.
Academic Information:
The Institute awards Higher Certificates, Bachelor Degrees and Honours
Degrees in Business, Computing, Design, Engineering, Nursing and
Science. The Institute also offers tuition and research to Master's
Degree level.
International Students:
At present most overseas students come through European exchange
programmes such as SOCRATES and LEONARDO. LYIT also has bi-lateral
agreements with some higher education institutes in the former Soviet
Republics, whose students spend some time at the Institute. The
Institute is now looking to establish further overseas links and is
specifically interested in recruiting suitably qualified students in the
scientific disciplines: Chemistry; Biology; Food Science and Aquatic
Science.
Student Profiles:
The majority of international students come to study at LYIT as a result
of bilateral agreements signed with approximately 50 partner colleges.
The students come under the ERASMUS chapter of the SOCRATES programme of
the EU. LYIT is compliant with ECTS (European Credit Transfer). A
multilingual Handbook is produced annually giving a synopsis of subjects
within courses, their credit ratings and the examination weightings. For
ECTS purposes LYIT operates a semester system.
