Around the coastline of
Ireland are 44 of the best 'Links' golf courses in the world, some new,
but many dating back to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth
century. These links represent to the golfer true golf as it has been
played since the origins of the game. Today many of these courses are
renowned world wide - Lahinch, Ballybunion, Waterville, Tralee,
Ballyliffin, Royal Portrush, Portstewart, Portmarnock, the Island, The
European Club to name but a few
Portsalon Golf Club is less well known but nonetheless deserving of its
fine reputation as a true links in the old style. The Club was
established in 1891 and is one of the founder members of the Golfing
Union of Ireland, the oldest golfing union in the world. Not only is
Portsalon a magnificent test of golf , its setting is simply
breathtaking. The golden beaches of Ballymastocker Bay and the beauty of
Lough Swilly and the Inishowen Peninsula beyond provide the backdrop for
almost 7000 yards that will entrall any golfer. Redesigned in 2001 by
Pat Ruddy, dune lined fairways, cannily placed bunkers and well
protected greens are the hallmark of Portsalon. You will wonder then,
why there are no crowded fairways or difficulty arranging tee times and
why green fees are so very, very reasonable.
This is what Irish golf is all
about. Portsalon represents a throwback to what the great courses such
as Ballybunion and Lahinch were like before they became recognised the
world over and before demand for tee times grew beyond their wildest
dreams. The course simply exudes character and charm, does not suffer
from any pretensions of greatness and offers all visitors a warm welcome
and the opportunity (lest we forget) to play a wonderful links.
Though Ireland has many great hidden golfing gems, Portsalon can
legitimately lay claim to being Ireland's best kept golfing secret. With
heather clad mountains plunging into the deep blue waters of the bay,
Portsalon has few peers with regard to scenic splendour.
Take the time to visit Portsalon and enjoy golf in this natural,
uncrowded links on the shores of Lough Swilly. The course is just over
20 miles from Letterkenny.
