Letterkenny Town Park
Letterkenny Town Park,
Letterkenny is the biggest public park in the region. The Letterkenny Town
Park, Letterkenny is also known as the Bernard McGlinchey Town park. The
Park opened in the year 1999. It is in the proximity of the St. Conal's
Hospital and is situated at the Hospital Roundabout. In order to enter the
park one needs to take the Derry Road and then the 3rd exit at the
Letterkenny Shopping Centre Round about. The first exit at the next
roundabout heads up to De Velera Hill. From there you can very well reach
the park.
This is one of the popular tourist attractions in
Letterkenny and the
theme of the park is Peace. There is a Garden of Remembrance in the park.
It is a tribute to the members of the Gardai, who had sacrificed their
lives in service of the United Nations. There are herbal gardens, flower
beds tree lined alleys playing grounds, bowling grounds and various entry
points in the park. There is a stone bench in the
Letterkenny Town Park
built as a honorarium to James Duffy (VC). The bench was unveiled on 10th
July, 2007 by the former Mayor of Letterkenny Ciaran Brogan.
The Park is the venue for several Parties and the Park Festival. In this
festival, every August, the local bands perform. The French Market also
takes place here every year. In 2007 a Levity II Luminarium opened in the
park. It is an inflatable atmosphere with a participative sculpture made
of translucent vinyl. It is really an enchanting experience to visit the
Luminarium. The park is developing to a great extent even today. The
Donegal County Council is continuously contributing to the development.
Therefore this open space in the county will soon become the greatest spot
of sightseeing in
Letterkenny.
The main entrance of the park is located just opposite to the hospital
roundabout on the
Kilmacrennan Road . If you really want to steal few
